Our Minimally Invasive Procedure

Keyhole surgery is a modern technique for correcting foot conditions using smaller incisions. This approach allows patients to experience less pain, faster recovery, and minimal scarring. Using this method, the surgeon can:

  • Correct the deformity with precise alignment
  • Minimise disruption to surrounding tissue
  • Reduce recovery time and improve overall safety

Special Tools Designed for Precision

Dr Ray works with Enovis, a world leader in foot and ankle tools. Together, they made the PECAplasty device, the first tool made just for this kind of bunion surgery. Using this method allows the surgeon to:

  • Line up the toe so the nail points straight
  • Keeps the bone steady while the screw is placed
  • Make the surgery more accurate and safe

Why Choose Keyhole Surgery?

This minimally invasive keyhole approach to bunion correction ensures smaller incisions, less tissue disruption, and a faster return to mobility than traditional surgery.

  • Less pain

Because there’s less disruption to the soft tissues around the foot, most patients experience only mild discomfort after surgery. Many are surprised by how manageable the recovery feels.

  • Quicker recovery

Thanks to stable internal fixation and minimally invasive tools, you’ll be able to walk immediately after surgery — using a special shoe and under guidance from your care team.

  • Less scarring

The procedure is performed through tiny incisions, often just a few millimetres long. This results in minimal scarring, better cosmetic outcomes, and a quicker healing process.

  • Lower chance of recurrence

Dr Ray’s published outcomes show a recurrence rate of less than 2%, giving you confidence in long-lasting results that feel and look natural.

How Has Keyhole Bunion Surgery Evolved?

Keyhole bunion surgery has undergone major advancements over the years – from basic bone reshaping to highly precise, walk‑on‑the‑day techniques. There are four distinct generations of development, each building on the lessons of the last:

  • 1st Generation

No screws. Patients needed long rest, heavy bandaging, and couldn’t walk for weeks.

  • 2nd Generation

Used wires that stuck out of the skin. Better, but still not ideal.

  • 3rd Generation

Modern techniques with screws that made the surgery safer and stronger.

  • 4th Generation

Developed by Dr Robbie Ray, this is the most advanced and precise version yet — offering smaller incisions, immediate weight-bearing, lower pain, and exceptionally low recurrence rates.

Patient Journey

Every patient’s path is a little different, but knowing what to expect can make everything feel more manageable. Below is a step-by-step guide to your journey with Dr Robbie Ray, from first consultation through to your final follow-up. We’re here to support you every step of the way.

Initial Consultation

At your first appointment, we’ll take time to understand your specific issue and how it affects your daily life. You’ll be given a full explanation of both surgical and non-surgical options, along with a discussion of recovery, outcomes, and any potential risks. You’ll receive a quote for self-pay or insurance codes if applicable. Pre-op questionnaires and a consent form will be sent to you, and we’ll arrange an X-ray to be reviewed at the next stage.

Surgical Planning Appointment

At your second appointment, we’ll review your X-ray and confirm it aligns with your condition. If needed, we’ll make small adjustments to the planned procedure. We’ll also check your consent form, assess pre-op functional scores, and answer any questions. You’ll be guided through recovery expectations and tips to make the process as smooth as possible.

2

Surgery Day

You’ll arrive having fasted — six hours for solids, two for clear liquids. You’ll meet the anaesthetist and see Dr Ray again for final checks and consent. After being taken to theatre, you’ll receive anaesthesia or sedation for your surgery. Pain should be minimal thanks to a nerve block. Most patients go home four to five hours later, once fully awake, fed, and mobilised. A physiotherapist will see you before discharge to ensure you’re walking safely, usually with a surgical sandal and possibly crutches.

2-Week Nurse Appointment

Two weeks after surgery, a nurse will remove your bandages and trim any dissolving stitches. They’ll apply dry dressings, check your healing progress, and report any concerns to Dr Ray if needed.

3-Week Surgeon Follow-Up

You’ll see Dr Ray again to review your scars, receive scar care advice, and get guidance on any specific movements. If appropriate, a referral to physiotherapy will be made.

6–8 Week Post-Op X-ray

An X-ray will be taken to check your healing progress. Dr Ray will review it with you during your appointment and confirm that recovery is going as expected.

6-Month Final Appointment

This is your final routine follow-up. A final X-ray will be taken to confirm full healing and ensure everything has progressed as planned.
